When I was about seven or eight, my favorite singer in the whole world was Freddy Fender. I had one of his albums on cassette (To put the time frame in perspective, this was so long ago it was before the clear plastic or black and clear plastic clamshell cases caught on. The tape was in a solid blue plastic one piece case.), and I wore the damn thing out.
Anyway, I was on a flight with my dad (and my sister, I think) to god knows where, and Freddy Freaking Fender was on the same plane. My dad took me up to meet him.
The details of the exchange are hazy to me, and all I really remember is a feeling of awe. To a little kid, it was like meeting the friendly genetic amalgam of Jesus and The Hulk.
Honestly, I haven't kept up with his career in recent years, but It really doesn't matter. All I need to know is that he was really nice to a little kid that liked him. Thanks, Freddy.

Dear Vangie & family, Many miracles were wrought by Freddy's life here on earth in the short time we had him. He gave me hope when I was down. My heart broke the day he died, I didn't listen to any of his music until Xmas Eve, then I sat alone listening to Before The Next Teardrop Falls. I asked God "why" and the tears began falling for you, Freddy, the Little Grasshopper & other family members. He lives, Vangie, in your heart and mine and he will never die as long as we have our memories and his music. I asked God to just wrap his arms around you Xmas Eve and give you comfort as only God can. Take care, we love you as Freddy's wife even tho we never met. Louise

Peace and love to Freddy. He was my Twin and he new it too. He visited me often and alway was like a big brother to me. We became very god friends at charlie's and then he went his way and I went mine. He was very inspiring to me and also was the key note speaker to my R and R class when I got out of prison, At the Federal Building with Reuben and Edna. we were the fast and the furious. He brought me a roll of duct tape prior to my incarceration in 1992, and told me that, it was all i needed in prison. He was a true friend. I loved his purple house which eventually changed color on Ocean Drive, He will Live in my heart always.. Peace and love..The Pig

I would like to thank God for Blessing us with Freddy's great voice. I am only 27 years old and although I never met him or knew him personally I always felt like I did. Growing up whenever I heard a Freddy Fender song I would turn the radio up real loud because I admired his unique voice. I am also a Christian and although he is gone from us, his great Legacy will live on forever. A few days after his death I was visiting my uncle in Stafford Tx and he was listening to a local Fm station that plays the good old stuff ( Tejano oldies )and they were playing some very old Live performances from way back then of Freddy Fender. The sound of his unique voice and music hit me in my Tejano Heart and I had tears in my eyes knowing that he was no longer here. God Bless you and your family. Hope the Lord Jesus Christ grants you the stength to cope. Thanks, JM Flores******God is good all the time!

Mrs. Huerta,
My condolences, I had the pleasure of meeting Freddy on several occasions and then working with Freddy when I managed "Los Rock Angels", who opened on a few occassions for the "Texas Tornados"; you may have seen a few of our T-Shirts Freddy collected,,,,,,
Freddy and I would always discuss acting, as I really enjoyed his performance in my favorite movie, "The Milagro Beanfield War". Freddy told me he never saw his work in the movie "Who will Sing the Songs"; I mailed him a copy to Corpus Christi and I hope you both enjoyed it,,,,,,
My friend's wife passed away from cancer 14 years ago and we immediately played the last album left on the record player, which was Freddy's "After the next Teardrop Falls". The next night, we heard Freddy was performing with Little Joe, and Margarito, Joe's then Road Manager heard our story and introduced us to Freddy. Freddy was gracious enough to hear our story and sign the album for my friend's family,,,,,,
Meeting Freddy was a dream come true for me; as he continues to be an inspiration to us Chicanos, as he was a Great Actor & Musician,,,,,,
Merry Xmas
