My father played the Steel Guitar for Freddy during his Pittsburgh, PA. stop over at The Twin Coaches while on tour supporting his hit, "Before The Last Teardrop Falls" back in the '70's. They hit it off together and Freddy was quickly referring to my father as "brother". This is where I met the man who would become a legend, backstage, doing two shows a night at a country music venue in western Pennsylvania. Unfortunatley, my father did not continue on tour with Freddy, despite Freddy's persistence, but they did stay in touch for a little while thereafter.
Later in life, and every now and then, I would see Freddy's name on a marquee somewhere, or see him featured in a magazine or on television, and I would just smile and flash back to that magical night that I met him, where I watched him perform from the side of the stage, flawlessly. I, of course, have pictures of him and I together as well as an autographed 8 x 10 from those performances...which I will cherish.
Freddy was one of the great ones. He far outlasted many artists of his time and it was very obvious that he enjoyed what he was doing. He will be greatly missed by everyone that not only knew him persnoally, but also by those that met him briefly or by those that were touched by his music.

My condolences to the family. I will miss freddie Fender, I went to several shows of his,he spoke with me and I thought he was a very down to earth friendly person, no one can ever replace him, his style of music was original and that's why he was so loved by everyone. He was the best! He is in a better place in heaven and hopefully met my Mother by now, because she also loved his music very much when she was alive. I will always keep him alive with his music which I listen to all the time.

I will miss anything new that Freddie would have had to offer us, in saying that I was very sad to hear of his death. Love his singing. My heart of sympathy goes out to his family.

i wrote a song/poem for vangie and freddy...you said you'd love me forever..and you'll never set me free.. you kept that promise that you made dear.. for that,i'll hold you always next to me..throught the years,we've grown closer together..our hair began to show our age..you would pick up the bible on the table.. and would read it to me page by page..your eyes began to show a teardrop..when i looked into your eyes and said goodbye.. as i closed my lips i slowly whispered .. my love for you will never die..and when the good lord came a callin..it was time to close the curtain..when the teardrops started falling..don't fret my dear, for i'll be near, just raise your head up high..for i'll be just above you ,singing in the sky... for vangie..manny gutierrez sundancemhg@msn.com 10/30/06
